ישׂראל ראַבאָן (1900–1941/2) איז געבוירן געוואָרן אין גאָוואַרטשעוו, אַ שטעטל אין פּוילן. פֿון 1902 האָט ער געלעבט אין לאָדזש. ער האָט געשריבן פּאָעזיע, פּראָזע און עסייען. אין הײַנטיקע צײַטן זענען ראַבאָנס שריפֿטן ווייניק באַקאַנט. דער סעמינאַר וועט זיך אָפּגעבן מיט עטלעכע קאַפּיטלען פֿונעם ראָמאַן די גאַס (1928). יעדעס קאַפּיטל שפּיגלט אָפּ די וואַנדערונגען פֿון אַ נע־ונדניק, אַ פֿרעמדער אויף די לאָדזשער גאַסן. ראַבאָן פֿלעכט צונויף בילדערישקייט, גראָטעסק, אייגנאַרטיקייט און באַרירט עטישע פֿראַגעס.

- La première épopée américaine en yiddish : terre, homme et mythe dans « Nayerd » de Y. Y. Shvarts
Séminaire de quatre séances, les mardis de 18h à 19h30 (du 9 au 30 juin)
Avec David G. Roskies (New York — Jérusalem)
“Nayerd” (1921-1922), la première partie du chef-d’oeuvre de Y. Y. Shvarts Kentoki (Kentucky), est la toute première épopée yiddish-américaine. Dès que Y. Y. Shvarts (1885-1971) émigre aux États-Unis en 1906, il rejoint le groupe d’écrivains et d’artistes Di Yunge (Les Jeunes). Mais ce n’est qu’en 1918, quand il s’installe à Lexington (Kentucky), que le poète “découvre l’Amérique”. Là, où tous les chrétiens, Blancs et Noirs, ont une estime particulière pour l’Ancien Testament, où l’individu se retrouve face à face avec la nature originelle, naît une nouvelle tribu juive : celle des Litvaks et des Juifs allemands, immigrés depuis longtemps ou fraîchement arrivés, colporteurs, bouchers, tailleurs, commerçants, avec, ici et là, quelques idéalistes. Une question cruciale alors se pose : ce nouveau pays et ses paysages sont-ils la nouvelle Sion ?

- “La lectrice l’attendait” : Ayzik-Meyer Dik et ses nouvelles

Ayzik-Meyer Dik (1814-1894), le prosateur de Vilna, est le premier écrivain yiddish ayant un vrai lectorat. Depuis environ 1850, une décennie avant les débuts de Mendele en yiddish, ses nouvelles, publiées sous forme de fascicules à raison de dizaines par an, connaissent une large diffusion dans les milieux populaires et notamment parmi les femmes. Au fil des années, des centaines de nouvelles voient ainsi le jour, tant en yiddish qu’en hébreu. Certains ouvrages sont à thématique historique, d’autres sont censés populariser les sciences ; les meilleurs d’entre eux se caractérisent par un ton satirique bienveillant, un langage authentique, et donnent un aperçu de la vie juive de l’époque. Nous allons étudier “Reb Shmaye Aliter, der gut-yontev-biter”, une nouvelle humoristique remarquable par sa grâce littéraire et son intérêt ethnographique.

- Entre deux mondes : la femme dans la littérature yiddish

Ce n’est pas un hasard si on appelle le yiddish “mame-loshn” (langue maternelle), c’est bien, et sous plusieurs aspects la langue des mères et celle des femmes. Après une présentation des lectrices et des écrivaines yiddish à partir des origines, nous passerons à des ouvrages d’auteures modernes, mémorialistes ainsi que poétesses. Les écrivaines évoquées décrivent la vie juive telle qu’elles la voient, une vie basée sur la tradition, oppressante, mais aussi empreinte de profondeur et de beauté, et en conflit incessant avec le monde moderne, dangereusement attirant. Cette confrontation entre les deux mondes est souvent perceptible dans leur œuvre.

- La Rue de Yisroel Rabon

Yisroel Rabon (1900-1941/2) est poète, prosateur et essayiste. Né à Govartshev, une bourgade de Pologne, il habite Lodz à partir de 1902. De nos jours, ses écrits sont peu connus. Au cours du séminaire, nous étudierons quelques chapitres de son roman Di gas (La Rue, 1928). Chaque chapitre reflète les errances d’un vagabond, étranger dans les rues de Lodz. Rabon mêle le pittoresque, le grotesque, l’originalité, ainsi que des questions éthiques.

At a moment when we cannot yet come together in person, we are pleased to be able to offer Yiddishists around the world an opportunity to convene virtually via Zoom. Let’s read, think, and discuss together in Yiddish — what better way to connect with one another beyond walls and borders ?
You may sign up for one, two, three, or all four of the seminars. Each seminar comprises four 90-minute sessions, for a total of 6 hours over the course of four weeks.

The First American Yiddish Epic : Land, Man and Mythos in “Nayerd” by Y. Y. Shvarts

“Nayerd” (1921-1922), the first segment of Y. Y. Shvarts’s masterpiece Kentoki (Kentucky), is the very first Yiddish-American epic. When Y. Y. Shvarts (1885-1971) immigrated to the United States in 1906, he joined the school of writers and artists known as Di Yunge. But it was not until 1918, when he moved to Lexington, Kentucky, that the poet “discovered America.” There where Christians, both white and black, held the Old Testament in esteem, there where the individual found himself face to face with primordial nature — would serve as the birthplace of a new Jewish tribe, made up of German Jews and Litvaks, established immigrants and new arrivals, peddlers, butchers, tailors, merchants, and, here and there, a few young idealists. The crucial question : would this country and its landscapes prove to be a new Zion ?

“Long Awaited by the Female Reader” : Ayzik-Meyer Dik and His Short Stories

Ayzik-Meyer Dik (1814-1894), a prose writer from Vilna, was the first Yiddish writer to enjoy a significant number of readers. Beginning in about 1850, a decade before Mendele’s debut, Dik published dozens of short stories in booklet-form each year. The booklets rapidly attained a mass readership, especially among women. Over the years, Dik published hundreds such stories in both Yiddish and Hebrew, including works with historical or popular-science themes. The best of these stories are characterized by a benevolent satirical tone, richly idiomatic prose, and insight into various corners of Jewish life in Dik’s era. We will read the story “Reb Shmaye Aliter, der gut-yontev-biter,” a humorous depiction remarkable for its literary charm and ethnographic interest.

Between Two Worlds : Women in Yiddish Literature

It is no coincidence that Yiddish is referred to as “mame-loshn” (the mother tongue), because it was indeed in many respects the language of mothers and of Jewish women more broadly. After an introduction to the early history of female readers and writers of Yiddish, we will continue on to works by modern authors, both memoirists and poets. These writers described Jewish life as they saw it : based in a traditional way of life that was simultaneously oppressive and full of depth and beauty, and which was in ceaseless conflict with the dangerous, foreign attractions of modern life — a confrontation between two worlds that is nearly always reflected in the themes of their work.

The Street by Yisroel Rabon

Yisroel Rabon (1900-1941/2) was born in the shtetl of Govartshev in Poland. Beginning in 1902 he lived in Łódź. He was a poet, prose writer, and essayist who is too little-known today. During the seminar, we will explore several chapters of his novel Di gas (The Street, 1928). Each chapter depicts various aspects of the wanderings of a vagabond, a stranger traversing the streets of Lodz. Rabon mixes the picturesque with the grotesque and the idiosyncratic, touching upon ethical questions along the way.
